Every scandal begins with a lie. But the truth will come out. And then comes the fallout and the outrage.
Scandals have shaped America since its founding. From business and politics to sports and society, we look on aghast as corruption, deceit and ambition bring down heroes and celebrities, politicians and moguls. And when the dust finally settles, we’re left to wonder: how did this happen? Where did they trip up, and who is to blame? From the creators of American History Tellers, Business Wars and Tides of History comes American Scandal, where we take you deep into the heart of America’s dark side to look at what drives someone to break the rules and what happens when they’re caught. Hosted by Lindsay Graham.

He seemed to be pleading for anyone to come forward. And also he sounded somewhat hopeful that his parents would be located. He said, we'll find them. It's better not to listen to the negative theories. There may be a casino, their phones off, no reception. Maybe they're on a boat having some fun with their friends. And he had gone around his neighborhood and asked his neighbors knocked on doors and said, do you guys have security cameras on your house? Could you review the camera footage and tell me if you see any cars coming and going from my home and he's talking to police? I saw some of his interviews with the police and I don't know what the problem is, but there is a history that Chandler had fallen and hit his head and had a severe concussion. But watching some of these police videos, I won't call them interrogation videos because he was not being interrogated. This was a very casual conversation that appeared to be with the investigators. His stories about the day-to-day stuff during the Fourth of July weekend were very aimless. And it's just the most benign details about the day. And then I drove home and my girlfriend Kat was there and then we went and caught some soda. But the police are trying to figure out, okay, so where were you this weekend? And he's giving them stories and his stories are matching up. And they're even checking with his girlfriend and saying, hey, were you with him the Fourth of July weekend? And his girlfriend saying, yeah, it was. But they're like, when was the last time you heard from your parents? And he said, my mom texted me on the Fourth saying that they were there. They had a rice safe and they're going to go down into town for this parade. And the detectives were like, okay, cool. So the Fourth, which was Sunday, well, they go to that town's website and they find that the Fourth of July parade was actually that Saturday, the third of July. So they're thinking, maybe his mom got the day wrong, but there wasn't a parade that day. It was the day before. After speaking with him, looking around and just getting statements from various people that knew Bart and Krista, they don't believe Chandler Halderson has been truthful with them. So they arrest him on July 8 at 930 in the evening. He was charged with providing false information in a missing person's case. And they announced this too. They said that this couple's disappearance was suspicious. So what did they find, Justin, because as part of the search here, they're going to search properties. They're going to search computers. What do they find? Right off the bat when they're searching his house, they're looking at that fireplace and they're thinking, you said that the glass on the fireplace was broken when you threw a rock or threw a ball with the dog, but there's more to this. There's something wrong with this fireplace, something had been burned in this fireplace. So they're going through that and they're collecting everything out of the fireplace. And then they go out to this property where this pool is. They're going to get his whereabouts and where he was at all weekend. And apparently he'd gone to this other property out in Dane County. There was a pool there that he and his girlfriend were swimming at and start searching. And they're going to end up finding human remains there. Now Aaron, this whole time Chandler's girlfriend is with him and she knows that his parents are missing. And apparently she is a true crime fan and watches date line and all those shows. And so she knows that the police are going to investigate or question the last person that was with the people that are missing. So she starts trying to help Chandler thinking if we can prove where you were, then you'll be cleared. If we can show what's going on, then they won't look at you. So she really is paying attention that whole weekend to what he's doing and even taking screenshots of his locations. One of those screenshots is in the middle of the night at this property where this pool is in the exact location where his parents remains or found.
